Andy and Ben Do Portugal & Spain

intervenientes).
Hi Olivia,
I hope
this email finds you well. R***** C******* from the Australian
Embassy has passed on your details as Alquimia dos Tachos is one of the most
exciting food blogs in Portugal. I’m working with MasterChef Australia winner
and finalist Andy Allen & Ben Milbourne as they are about to depart for a
trip to Portugal and Spain to film a series around food, travel, adventure and
culture. (…).
Andy
& Ben will be in Lisbon between 1-3 November and in Lagos on 4-5 November
and I thought there might be an opportunity for you to do an interview about
food or otherwise, with Andy either prior to departure, or perhaps arrange a
meeting together while he is in your country.(…).
(…)
gastronomia.

Apesar de não ter podido perguntar-lhes
pessoalmente, houve uma disponibilidade fantástica para me responderem a
algumas perguntas, que eu aqui vos deixo.

What is the purpose of the
project Andy & Ben Do?
Back in 2012 when Ben & I were on
Masterchef we made a promise to ourselves to travel to Mexico and learn more
about the culture and food that we were obsessed with. We were lucky enough in
2013 to have the team and the opportunity to make this happen, and then Andy
& Ben Do… was born. Being able to do that was like living the dream, and
then here we are a year later able to make it happen again in Portugal and
Spain, and it’s amazing. We’re really interested in sharing information around
food, travel and adventure with an audience, so of course we’re filming
everything and turning it into a 5 part series. Andy & Ben Do Mexico is
currently on my YouTube channel, and next year Andy & Ben Do Spain &
Portugal will also be there.

Australia know Portuguese
cuisine? Someone talks about it?
There isn’t a huge amount of focus on
Portuguese cuisine in Australia to be honest. I guess when you’re in another
country you only get a small part of the story. For example there’s a big focus
in Australia on the Mexican burrito – but we went to Mexico and didn’t see one
burrito! In Australia we have the Portuguese custard tart and the Portuguese
chicken (butterflied with a beautiful herb rub), but you really have to seek it
out to know more. That’s why we’re so exicted to be over here, discovering
everything for ourselves.

And you? Do
You already knew the Portuguese gastronomic culture, or had
to study a little about it?

Working in food now I know a bit more than
I did before I went into Masterchef, but I was just excited about coming here
and learning direct from the Portuguese people, chefs and restaurants. There’s
no better way to learn.

In
your opinion, the Portuguese food is…

Portuguese food is stooped in tradition
but the people we met along the way, like Jose Avillez, were much more about
tweaking tradition to create their own modern takes on their country’s
classics. Oh and it’s all seafood. If you love seafood, you’ll love Portugal
Why
Lisbon and Lagos?

If we had more time then we’d travel the
entire stretch of Portugal, but we had to select two great places for us to get
a taste of Portugal. Lisbon, as the capital, was exciting for us. We’ve just
left and we had the most amazing experience. We went to the markets then
cooking with Jose Avillez – for both Ben and I think was one of the best food
experiences we’ve ever had. We took a helicopter tour over Lisbon too. Then we
head down to Lagos and are staying in this villa and I just don’t want to ever
leave. It’s on the coast, everywhere is stunning, the people are lovely. You
are making it really hard for us to leave the country. I really want to come
back and see more. Heaps of people on Twitter and Facebook have said we have to
go to Porto next time – apparently it has a really well known food culture.
It’s on my list of places to visit! We’ve been travelling with Tempo Holidays
who arranged everything from Australia and they have really great local connections.
While in Portugal we’ve been travelling with Cityrama and they’ve shown us such
a good time. It’s been something we’ll never forget. And we’ve both probably
put on 10kg since arriving!

You also visited Spain. Do you think the food is
identical in this two countries?

From what I’ve seen, the difference
between Spanish & Portuguese food is the traditions. For countries that are
so close together, they are proud of the unique traditions that make their
cuisine different. Portugal has the seafood thing nailed. Spain knows Jamon.

Before Masterchef, both
had very different professions. You feel desire to
return to them, or the food has assumed the lead role in
your professional lives?
Absolutely – I was an electrician and Ben
was a school teacher and Masterchef allowed us both to get a taste of a career
and a life involved with food. I can speak for both of us when I say we’d never
look back. We both love the food industry, and I can speak for both of us when
I say we’d never look back.
“Obrigado Portugal!”
